This research theme focuses on the marine environment and the controlling physical, biochemical and ecological processes in the water column and sediments. The research includes studies of pre-historic, historic and possible future changes of the marine environment, human impacts, ocean circulation in various oceanic areas (mainly polar oceans and regional Swedish seas), mixing processes, ice, fluid dynamics, numerical model simulations, air-sea gas exchange (carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane…), land-ocean interaction, chemical/biological transformations in the water column, fluxes of substances between sediment and water, sediments as archive for anthropogenic impact and climate changes. The research theme study also methods to reduce eutrophication effects by, for example, oxygenation of hypoxic bottom waters. The department has a well documented competence in developing process oriented models. These models in combination with observations represents a major source of knowledge in order to asses various threats in our marine environment.
