Research

Dr. Matilda Palm holds a PhD in Physical Geography, Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. The title of the thesis is "Land use in climate policy – forest based options at local level with cases from India". Dr. Madelene Ostwald, Centre for climate policy research, Linkoping University, Sweden, was supervising the PhD together with the assisting supervisors, Dr Goran Berndes, Department for Physical Research Theory, Chalmers University, Sweden and Prof. Deliang Chen, Executive Director International Council for Science (ICSU). The PhD started the 1 March 2004 and the thesis was successfully defended the 27 November 2009. Main courses: Environmental Statistics, Global Change, Upscaling of land surface - atmospheric properties and fluxes based on remote sensing, Qualitative methods, Sustainability Science and GIS. She also holds a MSc in Physical Geography, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dr. Palm has experience in conducting research abroad. She conducted a substantial part of her PhD studies in India under the supervision of Professor N.H. Ravindranath at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and she has also worked as a consultant for the UK firm Ecosecurities. During her PhD training she used field methods such as assessment of vegetation and soil as well as participatory rural assessment techniques related to land use. Palm also uses GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis and modeling.
Dr. Palm presently works, part time, at World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) as a researcher where she conducts technical coordination of field activities for the project Rewards, Use and Co- Investment for Environmental Services (RUPES) in the Bac Kan province, Vietnam (http://rupes.worldagroforestry.org/). The task includes research design, research team building, participating in research as the principal investigator, and report writing. She will also participate in writing scientific publications and printing materials on the topic on Reduced Emission from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) and RUPES/Payment for Environmental Services (PES). ICRAF is a research centre with long experience in research related to agroforestry, reduced emission from deforestation and degradation (REDD) and payment mechanisms for environmental services. ICRAF manages multidisciplinary projects with focus on participatory methods.
